Hey guys. I am sorta new here.. I've read a lot of posts but just now finally registered.
I have ridden forever but I am by no means an expert in the world of HD (this is only my second one) so I'm hoping some of you gurus can help me out..
My latest acquisition is a full Custom.. The problem I'm having is trying to figure out what year everything is so I can buy parts.. I think I may need a clutch but I'm not positive what year to order it for..
What I have is a custom with a 2004 Custom frame with a 1340 Evo and chain final 5 speed trans..
I pulled the engine numbers and it shows its from a 1999 Softail Custom.. The issue is that model has a belt drive... And this trans has a Delkron case so there is no useable number I can find on it.. The primary also has an older style 3 bolt derby on it.
So does Anybody have any idea what years I should order clutch and primary parts for with the chain drive 5 speed?
Thanks.
Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF. There is no easy way to answer your question. Parts for the engine are straight forward as 1998, unless it has been radically altered. As for your trans, the frame date is a clue, as the trans may also be 2004. Best way to be certain is to contact Delkron themselves. It is quite possible, if your clutch is a Harley one, that it is the same as a 1998, however it could be an aftermarket brand. You will need to remove the primary cover to replace the clutch and it is a good idea to take a look, to see what it tells you. The 3 bolt derby is Evo, so is correct for your year, the 5 bolt is twincam. There were no chain drive bikes from that period, but it is easy to convert from belt.
Thanks you for the reply and great info.. I will take a look at the clutch and see if there are any numbers or hints on there. If that fails I will get in touch with Delkron and see if they can maybe help me out.. If not I'm thinking I will just pull the clutch and take it with me to the HD shop and start trying to compare and match..
Thanks again.
