Hi I'm a newbie here and I'm not sure where this question or questions should fall exhaust or fuel. I have an 06 Heritage Classic with aftermarket side slash pipes and an S & S air cleaner. I have a stage 1 and apparently that is suppose to MAP the bike so the EFI does it's thing properly to adjust air/fuel mixture. However with the back fires, high rpms at idle and serious signs of too rich a mixture inside the exhaust doesn't seem to me it's doing it's job right.
issue #1 I have oil dripping out of the back of the air cleaner and the local shop says they have no idea what could cause that and their resolve is put stock air cleaner back on. Lots of riders change out the stock air cleaner without issue
issue #2 back fires when I roll off the throttle to gear down.
Now I always thought that was a too lean fuel mixture but my exhaust are black on the inside. I have checked for an air leak the old fashion way and doesn't appear to be one at the manifold (no change in rpms) did this cuz shop says maybe an air leak issue but I would of thought when they connected to the program device (sorry do not know technical term) that it would of spit out an error code or something.
To all my questions the local shop simply says "it's within Harley specs" so should it be within HD specs if I run after market pipes and air cleaner?
Sorry I know that's like three questions in one post but they kinda all link together. I know very little about EFI systems. In hindsight should of stuck with a carb. Any insight is appreciated thanks in advance
The oil drip is many times a too full crankcase. your oil level should be about halfway between add and full, not all the way to full. Make sure you check your manual on how to check your specific model . As far as popping, even if your bike is dyno tuned, depending on your exhaust and the rpms you shift at ,you will sometimes get a little pop , especially a very free flowing exhaust. If you only have the Harley download, then that is probably the main problem.
If it has a stage one ac oil can get in at the filter. Pull the ac and check to see if there is any holes around where it is connected for the backing plate. Should be a plug on both sides of the backing plate. Just down from it there may be holes, very small, to let the crank case breathe.
Back firing can be cause form several things.
First check to make sure the headers are sealed good at the exhaust port. I use a cigar to check. The slightest movement of air will cause the smoke to move to indicate a leak. Since it is used it is possible it hasn't been tuned properly and can be running lean. If it has a tuner check to see if it is working. You may need to disconnect it to see.
hope this helps ya
As Bob said, the oil is likely because of too much oil. Check your level. As for the popping on deceleration if you can't find a leak then you may need a tune. I have a SE high flow ac, gutted head pipe and Klock Werks slip-ons with the recommended map and still have some popping on a full roll off. Just did the upgrades recently so I'm hoping when I get it properly tuned it will eliminate the issue. The f/a ratio on decel has it's own set of parameters that can be set when tuned based like the rest on throttle position and rpms.
