I looked on the Harley website and the slim hubs appear black, I could be wrong.

In my case I went to harley to take measurements after I purchased deluxe wheels on CL. Dyna outside of pulley to outside of rotor was 3/16" to ¼" different from deluxe rear. Dyna having the pulley with the protruding inside mounting flange and deluxe pulley with minimum to no protrusion. I measured for a half hour and had harley staff out there trying to help. After I found out cost of softail pulley very close to cost of dyna hub from JP catalog I went with new hub and stock Dyna pulley. I've heard it's best to replace both front pulley, rear pulley and belt all at the same time. My bike has 48K on it so belt and pulleys match.

Lacing new hub (if you go that route) is easy. Used wife service manual for 16" sportster wheel. Had it trued when tire installed, relatively cheap.
'08 and up softail have 25mm axles- skipped 1" phase as AFFM3 has said. I don't think you'll notice height difference up front..my bike tracks and handles way better now with 16's. I ride solo--no 2up for me.
Never had Metz 888's but put them on my wifes bike--good tires. You may want to check Dunlop American elite reviews--excellent touring tire, handle and track great so far. Supposed to have longer tread life, time will tell for me.

Was it a stock Dyna hub you got from J&P, do you have the item number? Sound like this is the better way to go, my milage is very close to what you have.
I haven't used the 888's yet either, but I am very happy with the 880's I have been using, I will check into the Dunlops also.

Also, how much different are the softail hubs from the Dyna hubs. If the pulley's flange you refered to is what is different with the width, could a Dyna pulley be put on the softail hub and obtain the same width required? If so, re using the pulley currently on my bike would be an idea. I will have to go to the local dealer and do some research.

J&P Part: 202-205--this is chrome, 25mm for $179-$200. There are black ones made by rev tech for $270-- pretty pricey.
The rear deluxe hub I removed was about a 1/2" to 3/4" wider than the dyna hub, hence no offset flange on the softail pulley.

Well I made the first step towards putting some 16" tires on my ride. Bought a set of Softail Slim rims off a forum member for a decent penny. They were take offs when he got the bike, so thay have never seen any action. Know I get to set the offset on the front wheel and take apart the rear to set it up for the dyna. Gonna be a while though, work is sending me away for a little while. I'll keep ya'll updated as I move along.

OK boys, decided to give you all an update picture. I just don't want the Dyna Forum folks to see it until done. Just got done buffing the front fender, will finish the tank and rear fender tomorrow and start putting it back together for the final time.
