Well no way am I grinding down my steering neck. I may have to someday put the bike back to stock. I have way more than a quarter of an inch difference in hight. right now I cannot get the nut on that holds the bottom stem in place. the one that looks like a gear. Please give me a good technical reason why the stems cannot be swapped out. they are both one inch and both pressed in. any competent machine shop can do this. I built a triumph chopper years ago with a kawi front end and the for stem was a 1 inch harley stem pressed into the kawi bottom tree.
I will try and post some pictures, but I think I will let this project go till the winter. because once I go this route the front wheel needs to be offset to conpensate for the narrower fork spacing. and I am sort of out of funds for now.

Also not sure what the differences are exactly between your 07 and my 94 wide glide but there is no room to grind down the top of the neck. I would have to first have the inside of the neck milled to bring the bearing race down . right now it sits almost flush with the top of the neck.

Wondering if because of the raked trees on the wide glide required a different neck length to get it to the required angle for rake and trail.

Sorry I probably shouldn't of put "Don't replace stem" in upper case. It may be the hot ticket for these front end conversions. I was thinking the upper fork tins may not line up correctly with a longer stem and just sharing the way I went with my bike.
As I recall the 05 and older dyna's don't require grinding on the upper neck. My 07 did, but just about an ⅛". Also had to grind off the fork stops.

Okay I refer to that guys page a lot. I kinda got to replace the stem anyway. I knicked it with the grinder when I ground off the inside of the lower fork as someone else did instead of grinding off the stop on the frame.

okay found the culprit. the stem in this softail tree has already been modified. they moved the bottom snap ring grove up the shaft about a quarter inch and ground off the old one. Like maybe they were gonna use it on an old sportster and then didn't so the shaft has to be replaced no matter what. because it will never be long enough. the wide glide and softail shafts are definitely the same length they just made this one unusable for this application. thanks though for the help fskitch

I just went thru most of the links to the different work on the page you provided fskitch. What I don't like is that he doesn't go into any detail as to the work being done. He spends multiple pages going over the breakdown and then all of a sudden, there it is the front end completely on the bike, absolutely no info on fitment. It was the same way with his hydraulic clutch install, no mention of parts (part numbers) used or anything.

I think that vintage of bike is much more straight forward, just a matter of grinding down the lower tree "wings" and I'm thinking it bolts right up. I'm going back and forth with my new dyna. Leave it mid glide or go FL? If I do go FL I'm thinking an FLD front this time as I understand it bolts right up without any modification. Oh well I'm going to go through at least one set of tires first......I think

If yer referring to using FXST trees on a 5-spd Dyna, they're practically a bolt on. Factory uses the same casting for the FXST & FXDWG trees (Dyna fork stops are cast in) & just trims the wings 1/4"-5/16" before chroming. That is literally it. 5 minutes with a 4" angle grinder & done.
