Default Trike conversion

I am considering converting my 2007 Ultra Classic to a trike and need your suggestions as to which kit,and options, etc. I should purchase. I am 72 years old, have "dropped" my new ultra in a parade while doing formations with the Shriners, and will not let my wife ride with me because I am afraid I will drop it with her on it. I am not new to motorcycles and have been riding since 1964 and this is my second Harley. I would average 14,000 miles a year on my "wing" with my wife on the back, but I'm afraid I am at a point where I need to consider a trike. I know it will be adifferent ride, but I just don't want to give it up. Thanks for your input. Halfbreed.

The least expensive way to go is with a Voyager trike conversion kit. We just put one on our '05 Heritage for my wife, who has RA. Costs around $4000, no tax. Name: Anitastrike001.jpg

Find a kit you like the looks of and feel is reasonable in price, you will wan't to rake the front end and independant suspension it will make the ride and handleing of the trike much better. I have built my wife two both goldwings. The wings are good because of the reverse but you can add that to the h/d. Good luck and do some serches on the web, a lot of info out there. The first kit I had was a champion sidecar. The 2nd was a trike shop kit from trike shop in daytona. You may want to check into DFT trikes also they make a very nice h/d kit.

I would look at adding a sidecar before converting to a trike. Just my opinion.

Adding a side car takes a completely different set of riding skills. Unless you have driven a hack and know what the right hand turn fly is about, you need to hold to your area of experience. A trike is a different beast no doubt, but a hack is not a bike with an attachment.

halfbreed,

Kits and the cost to put them on add up but might be the least expensive way to go. Look around though as there are deals galore and depending what you may get from the private sale of your bike and your willingness to travel, it may be best to look for a decent used one. Here is a link fora 2004 with5860 miles, located in Laconia for 24,500. I think new they are in the 30's.

And what someone said about sidecars is true. I recently bought a 10 year old Ultra w/ sidecar with only 2184 miles on it. It was owned by a 76yo man who had never ridden before and thought the sidecar would take the hard part away. It didn't and he didn't ride it much.

Have you driven a trike yet? If not you should consider doing that and see how it feels. I'm not wondering if the trike recquires a few hidden trricks with regards to turning?

Good luck and I know you will end up doing something perfect for you and your wife.

2nd the Voyager. I wasnt happy with the build quality of the unit so I made a few modifications to make it seem like part of the bike. If your pickey about the little details you may want to see one for yourself.
