I did a little research and apparently "hack" is a spinoff of the word hackney.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hack

A hackney is a coach, or carriage, pulled by a horse. Often for hire, like a taxi (which is also referred to as a hack)

To me, my sidecar is a carriage "pulled" by my bike, thus, it is my hack.

I always thought it was the taxi analogy.
