just got back from 2500 mile round trip to Sturgis. Me on the Ultra, wife on tri glide. Ultra is '03 w/95" and cams. Tri has stage 1 and V&H slip ons. Got the same mileage for the trip, 39.3. Mostly freeway, with some fun stuff (Lolo pass, Yellowstone park, Big horn's). Not bad for an average MPG.
Went for a 300 mile ride up the coast which included some 90 mph stretches and averaged 33 mpg. No passenger. Stage I Triglide...
Overall average is about the same...
so i guess it sounds like the 6th gear is an overdrive and only used on the freeway. and of course i understand the more you "twist the wick" and the faster you go the less your gas mileage. makes sense to me.
thanks,

Our 6th gear is not only used on the freeway... In Texas we have many 2 lane highways where the speed limit is 85 - know we've gone faster than that but don't make it a habit - but it's smooth riding...
Also, is some areas we've traveled there's not many folks on the highway; non-conjested with businesses/home and country where you can very easily ride faster...
You may have some freeway's where you can't ride very fast... Too many roads aren't condusive to even ride the speed limit...
I never check my milage either....I just ride. I have let it get to reserve a few times, but when I ride with Hubby, he doesn't need to get gas as often. So usually I go 150 miles and gas up.
I still have the stock pipes and A/C, and I have been getting around 33 to 35 MPG but I'm still breaking in the bike, it just has 500 miles on it today.
Are you still having trouble filling up or have developed a technique that works for you?
From the left side, turn the handlebars to the right which gives me a little bit more room. I have the flip-up fuel lid. I decided it doesn't pay to try and 'top off' like in a car.
