Very nice looking rig! This may be a dumb question but what is the advantage of such a long tongue on a bike trailer? I understand how its aids in backing of a trailer on a car or truck but can’t grasp the reasoning on a bike. What am I missing?

Thanks, we're enjoying the trailer so far.

As far as the tongue length, there are a couple of advantages that I have noticed. When riding with the trailer connected to the bike, the longer tongue enables me to see the bike better in my mirrors.

The longer tongue also allows plenty of room to mount a cooler rack. When I took these photos, I had just returned from the painter having the trailer color matched to the UC. I removed my cooler rack for the painter. It's now reinstalled and the tongue length doesn't look quite so out of proportion. I hope the manufacturer (American Legends) had some engineering reasons to use that tongue length. All I know is that it pulls very nicely.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but it's from several months ago anyway. Can anybody give me an idea of what it might cost to get a trailer painted? I'm finding a lot of used trailers for sale, all the wrong color. I know you get what you pay for, but what might one expect to pay for a color-matched paint job?

Hey Road Hog, I don`t know if you are still reading this post but the question about painting a trailer is a little hard to answer. A .lot depends on the color. There is 1,2 and 3 stage colors. I am semi retired from auto body work and have done a lot of painting over the year`s. Material cost`s are unbeleavable. I would suggest going to your local paint shop and see what they say. also I think a lot depends on what area of the country you are from because labor rates vary.

That's a tough question. My painter was able to take one of my side covers to the paint store and they matched my Deep Cobalt Pearl for $140 / quart. My painter charged me $350 labor to paint the trailer. He disassembled the trailer, painted it and reassembled it. I was very pleased with the results.

My painter did my last one for 350.00 But he has painted several for me, or I should say painted the same one several time.... I keep trading bikes.

I bought my paint from HD, was as cheap as the local paint store. Blue Flame Pearl...now if it was black...a high gloss black will do....plus with the trailer tongue and the paint not right next to each other ( as a side panel or top to a tour pac) you can get away with not having a "perfect" match...but most will want that.

Here's a link to most trailer companies...

Still reading. I suspected I was looking at $200-$300 to get a trailer painted, but after reading recent posts it looks like $300-$400. After some research on HD paint colors I discovered that my 09 Ultra is actually Black Pearl, not pearl gray like I've been telling everyone. I suspect Black Pearl is one of the more expensive paint colors. Oh well, if it ends up looking as good as Cajun_Arkie's setup, it'll be money well spent.

Thanks all for the replies!

You could always buy some spray cans of Rustoleum.

Ya still around? I have the same trailer in black. Leaning more toward painting the bike to match the trailer though.

I got on the computer to try figure out what the red wire is for in my 5 pin trailer light plug. Bike came with a hidden flat 4 way plug but the trailer has a 5 wire set up. Actually there is a 6th wire for trailer brakes.

I bought this trailer used. It doesn't have electric brakes does it? That could be cool. I'll look into it more. Trailer's been sitting waiting for me for a year now and it's time.
