No. Nobody here has been scared off. But, I'll warn my relative of the heat issues (which, seem to be apparent in all the newer models anyway) and to be prepared to dump some funds on cooling mods. She is looking at a new 2011 model tri-glide. So, we'll see.

She will be farther ahead of the game that the rest of us. My 10 is scary close to being the trike I want it to be, lazy 6th gear and a little sluggish off the line when two up and loaded.

That 2011 gear change put the torque back in it and has the rest of the 10 and 09 owners scrambling to get that gear!

seriously, there is a back order from some aftermarket suppliers because we are doing so many change overs. Feedback engineering, I can't believe it took HD until the 3rd model year to get it right!

When she dumps the cat, "different headpipes" and gets the AFR richened up she will be tickled to death with it.

Sorry, but what is an AFR? I am still new to motorcycle maintenance, etc. So, some of the terminology out there is beyond me. I'm sorry.

With the cat. Obviously, that seems to be the first thing on everybody's priority list. It is astounding how much cooler the bike runs once you lose it. But...are there really many aftermarket pipes available for the tri-glide? I haven't looked closely at them, but all I've noticed for them were slip-ons.

I think she'll be pretty excited to hear that the '11 is the best model yet. Especially wiht the gearing differences. Makes me a little excited, too. I just hope she'll let me ride it...at least once.

Unfortunately, she isn't much into forums and discussion boards...so, I don't know that I can get her to join up here. Regardless, I appreciate your input and help.

AFR is air fuel ratio, the new Tri's have a 14-6 AFR Lean and any engine run lean will run hotter. Just one of several things we do is to richen up the AFR "helps with cooling"

The Cat is in the headpipe, bolts to the heads, not a slip on. You must be thinkiing mufflers.

No need for her to start hanging out in the techniacal threads or to worry about it. If she won't be doing a lot of parade duty, riding at idle in traffic on hot days she won't to worry about doing any modifications to the Trike if she don't want to.

One post can't be all encompassing enough to include all the things we do to cool them down and why! Most people change the headpipe and mufflers for the sound because stock with the converter in the headpipe they sound pretty anemic. They will run a little better and cooler with an aftermarket headpipe, Fuel Motto, Fulsac, and one late comer I forgot make them. I listed the main two the other is true duals for the Tri and she will lose so much torque from them it will cancel out the gear. If she don't go with a good fuel management.

This is getting to technical even with me trying to prevent that. Just rest assurred for all but the most discriminating rider the bone stock 11 will be ok.

If interested in the cooling or performance mods go to the sticky sections on the Tri glide forum.

Thanks! Will go check out the sticky.

I was aware that the cat was in the headpipe on the touring models. What I was saying is that I was unaware of a full exhaust set available for the tri-glide. All I have noticed (without much searching) are slip-ons. Main reason I brought that up is that exchanging the stock exhaust with aftermarket is the easiest way to lose the cat. I hope I was clear this time? Anyway, you mentioned some exhaust manufacturers, so I will look into it and give her some direction that way.

No...lol...she doesn't like parades, or even riding with other people much. She is pretty much a solo rider. Main reason she wants a trike is that she is short and as she is getting older, she is feeling less stable on two wheels. Well...that and the storage capacity of the Tri-Glide is pretty impressive. lol. She told me that for 2011 the storage capacity was increased as well. Seems that H-D must have improved the '11 on all angles!

Alright, I'm off to check out the other forum. Thanks!

I assume to much, parade style riding don't mean she has to ride a lot in funeral processions as much as her riding style, area or geography.

A lot of time at lights at idle, she live in a metropoaitan area in the south/south west as opposed to rural and just get into the summer driving stuck in traffic situation from time to time. In the wind, the stock is fine. July through early Sept. in some parts of the country heat puts a lot of strain on an air cooled engine, especially one with a catalytic converter and running lean.

Two issues here, engine service life and rider comfort, series of mods we do for both....

I guess that I am GUILTY AS CHARGED. I haven't been on here for quite a long time myself. Its good to see some of the "old farts" haven't given up on the forum.
I have to admit that I am glad to see the split of the forum. I think its good to have a place for the Tri riders to air their problems but I am also glad that we got our trike/hack space back. I have always enjoyed the varied discussions that are voiced on this space.

I'll try to get back on more often.

I agree with you. The split of the forum was certainly needed and proved to be a success. I come come over here every day but don't post very often.
