A couple of other guys and I built a motorcycle skills range--painted permanently on the surface of the runway of the old City airport. A couple of videos of yours truly doing a magnificent job screwing up the exercises, but had a lot of fun doing it. By the way, the pipes are SE II's, with Thunder Monster baffles. The one I like the best is the Cornering Range.
Well, it helps that I work for the City and I knew that:
1. They allow a number of car clubs--both vintage and sports to use the runway for their events--including 1/8 mile drags.
2. The City provides a Skateboard park for skateboarders--which is every bit as dangerous, if not more so than a slow speed motorcycle skills range
How could they say "no" to a facility provided to enhance motorcycle safety and skills.
By the way, the Police Department now uses it as a part of their motorcycle training.
I talked the local HOG chapter into buying the pavement paint. It probably helped that I am the safety officer. Doing this coure is one of the reasons I volunteered for that position. This has been on my agenda for quite a while. I was always frustrated by the lack of pre-built/marked facilities for riders to use. This avoids the time involved in set-up each time you want to practice.
The Parks and Rec Department has now agreed to list the course as one of their facilities in an annual brochure of services and programs they have available. My next step is to nudge them into providing the paint to re-paint the course annually.
