Default Mascot Concerns

I have been away at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin for a few weeks and have just returned recently. I apologyse for not addressing your concerns sooner.

I noticed that there seem to be more posts on the Road Captain volunteer thread on why we should not have the Mascot and HDForums represented at Myrtle Beach and other rallies then volunteers signing up. I decided to hold a poll to see if this is something we really want to do or just continue passing the Mascot randomly as we have been allowing only a select few people per year to sign it. I think we need to settle this issue before we procede any farther.

I may be wrong, but I thought the original intent of signing was that only the ones who carry it get to sign it.
Correct me if I am wrong

I was not aware that the mascot could not go to a rally. My understanding is that it has to travel by motorcycle. If it can get to a rally without the benefit of UPS, USPS, et. al., then I see no problem. Members meet and sign it, and send it on it's way. The rules say that all members are eligible to sign it, not that they have to carry it.

My problem would be with sending it just so it can make a rally, rather than showing up at the rally on a member's bike. If it can get to the rally via a member's bike, then I see no problem with that, and with mulitple members signing it. The original point was for the flag to move via motorcycle and to bring as many members as possible together.

Are we trying to turn a simple thing into "Brain Surgery"?

Regards,

Bill

I agree....... On most points. I feel that rallies are a great way to spread the word of our forum. However, I traveled 300 miles to pick up the mascot and carry it thru cold, wind, sunburn, and ole lady bitchin. I also realise some folks endured a lot worse then me. I feel I EARNED the right to tattoo the mascot, as did those before me and those after. I feel that it should be restricted to those that help MOVE the mascot around the country. I do not feel just because you show up at a rally, HDF member or not, should give a person the honor of signing. Besides, if everyone signs it, you would soon be running out of space for sigs before it made it around the country. Which brings up another point. What happens when it does fill up and there is just no more room? Is there a HDF musuem to retire the mascot and start another one? Anyway, some things to think about.......[sm=confused06.gif]

I traveled 500 miles one way to pick it up, and another 250 one way to hand it off to another member, but that doesn't give me exclusive right to it.. If I had been able to make a connection with other members at the rally where I picked the flag up, I would have had no problem with them signing it. They rode there and endured the same road experiences I did. If members travel by motorcycle to a rally, and they take the time to get together with other members and get involved, then why should they be excluded? The whole point is fellowship, not who endured the most hardship to move it.

I am against the flag moving by any means except member motorcycles, but I still feel that if members show up somewhere for a meeting, the honor of signing should be open to them. If the flag gets full of signatures, get another one and attach it to the first. By the time it travels the country and gets back to Mac, maybe we will have some means to archive it. If not, then all involved will have the memories, photos, maps, and most of all the opportunities of meeting members that it presented.

Not trying to get in a pi$$ing contest here, just pointing out what I feel the spirit of the mascot should be.

Regards,

Bill

The idea behind the mascotcan only be spoken behind those who started it - my .02 - I though it was ment as a way for memmbers to meet members and my concern was that it would skip the Northeast as I read in a previouse thread, looked as if the Rallies were dictating it's travels

How about both? If the mascot just happens to be somewhere where there is a rally, great! If not, let the members who post an interest make arrangements the way they've been doing.

I don't think it would be right for it to stay cooped up until some big rally comes along - pass it along and let it go where the wind takes it!!

i agree, dont let a rally dictate it, but if its in the area then so be it
i posted 1 1/2 months ago that i could pick it up in myrtle to move it to the north east, as i requested
i would still like to do that
as i stated, i can get it passed off from me to just about anywhere in ny, pa, ri, ma, va, md and even ohio or indy
i can take as much time as i like, i own my own co.

so, again, i would still like to move it north, and would still like to set up a nice ride with some members in myrlte

I am in no way suggesting that rallies dictate the movement of the mascot, and the mascot should not be ratholed until some rally comes along.

If it's movements get it to or near a rally fine, let who ever is there sign it. If there are people to move it, then move it, whether it misses a rally or not.

Regards,

Bill

The rules for the Mascot were set down by Admin and the moderators at that time. The mascot will be at Myrtle Beach and at the Midwest Rally. At this time it looks like there will be at least 75 members in Effingham, IL on June 17th so why would we want the Mascot not to be there? You do not have to carry it to sign it. All members involved in transporting it or who see it at a rally can sign it. If we run out of room for signatures then we will get another Mascot. The old Mascot will either be retired and returned to Admin or we could let it travel with the new one. Admin has not decided yet. The only time it will be mailed or shipped is if it gets stuck somewhere where it can't be transported for an extended period of time.

All rule changes are to go through admin. The purpose of the Mascot is to bring members together. Rallies are one of the best ways for that to happen. We were unable to get it to Daytona due to weather problems. If we have to make a detour due to a rally then we will get it back to were it was going after the rally. In other words If I have to drive to West Virginia to get it to someone that was in line to get it next (prior to the Midwest Rally) then I will make arrangements to make that happen.

I closed the poll since this has already been decided.
