Default 2001 Deuce watt draw?

Does anyone know if I could put a continous 165 watt draw on my 2001 Deuce without causing any lighting or electrical problems? I am considering buying an electric riding suit for winter riding.

Thanks,

Junior Bravo

That works out to about 14 amps - seems a bit high. Should not be a problem unless you run a lot of other stuff as well or at idle. Make sure you fuse the power lead. I run a heated vest only, and only when it's real cold. I tried the vest and pants but returned the pants - way too warm.

Sorry to be precise but when the engine is running the regulator usually clips the voltage at 14.4 volts therefore this will bring the current consumption down to 11.4 amps

Remember when the voltage drops the current will rise so it is important to keep the engine running a little higher than tickover when you are stopped just to compensate.

e.g. 12V @ 165 watts = 13.75 amps

If you consider the headlamp at 55 watts then you would be running an equivalent of 3 extra headlamps when the suit is on. You need to find out the maximum output of the alternator on your bike and the running current of the bike under normal conditions and see if you can handle the extra load.

Hope this helps

Your absolutely correct Paul, sometimes precision is of the essence. The regulator on my softail clips at 14.2 volts, same as my truck.
