Last night on the ride home the bike started running rough about 3 miles from the house. Once I got it in the driveway and idled down it died and would not start again. The starter would engage but engine would not turn over. Today after work (had to start the truck first time in 6 weeks) I took the seat off and the battery read 11.82 volts - really really dead! Put a charger on it for 1/2 hour then boosted the bike alive - started fine. The voltage meter started at 12.2 volts and was steadily dropping at about 0.1 volts every 10 seconds or so, and that is with the bike reving at about 2000 rpm.
Am I right in assuming the regulator went south? Is there a way to test it before running out and buying a new one?
I unplugged the regulator from where it connects down low on the crank case near the primary on the left side of the engine, then I put a multimeter on the two leads of where the regulator plugs in. I got continuity across those but none from either one when testing them separately to ground, so I have a good stator, right?
How much resistance should I be getting when testing across the two leads of the regulator plug itself?
Also your evo has a habit of unplugging the regulator plug from vibration. Make sure this isn't the problem before you go nuts. It works loose and does not make a connection. If you show no output from the stator, open up the primary cover and check the inside of the rubber plug where it goes through the case and see if the wires are still intact.
