Cost to replace an ECM
Team,
HD dealership has me over a barrel. My 2000 Road King Classic has finally taken a crap. I had HD pick the bike up and they went to work. First, they said it was the fuel pump (I recently bought a new one and replaced it... According to them, the new one I bought is bad). So they charged me $395 to replace the whole fuel pump system.
Then the called me today and said I need a whole new ECM. They're estimating the entire job will cost at least $1500.
Here's my concern; I have off-market highway pegs, a makeshift sissy bar, and they know I don't want to pay much. I'm worried they're inventing problems and overcharging me so I'll "sell" my non-running bike to them for $100, they'll fix everything for dirt cheap, then sell it for $8000 (the blue book retail value).
I'm currently planning on taking the bike elsewhere and having them do the repairs. Anyways, I just wanted to see the thoughts of the forum. Should it really cost $1500? I appreciate everyone's time!!

You need to add a signature on the forum control panel on the year model and letters of your bike. Is it a FI? Would appear the ECM is only $500. Not bad for the fuel pump. Did you replace it with a OEM?

Sorry for the lack of info; it's a 2000 Road King Classic FLHRCI. And with the pump, my only concern is that the one I bought from Amazon wasn't actually bad in the first place. Would they sell me a bad item? Maybe, but I doubt they'll reimburse me. And I can't imagine they Harley would acknowledge that they're charging me for work I didn't actually need.
Cost of the ECM is @$500.00 (HD part#32423-99) and takes about 10 minutes to change it out. Then it has to be programmed with a laptop for the bike and that shouldn't take more than 30 minutes. So, they would be charging you over $1k to do a job that should take less than an hour. Something smells........My guess is they don't really have a clue what the root problem is and they are giving you a shotgun price to cover their butts.
Carb conversion can be done for more or less the same price as the $600.00 it SHOULD cost to change out the ECM and hope that is what your problem actually is....Your choice. I chased mine with @$800.00 worth of parts before I cut my losses and changed it over to a carburetor.

Nuts. I looked into changing over to a carburetor, and many posts on this forum recommended against it. However, I'm aware that HD didn't really "get" fuel injection until about 2005. Maybe I'll make the switch. How labor intensive / costly was the switch? Did you do it yourself or have a dealership do it?

I liked the EFI and until it took a dump, (firing on only one cylinder) it worked very well. When it got to the point that the codes weren't showing the actual problem and a very experienced tech I know at a dealership ran out of suggestions, I bit the bullet. 3 years and @25K miles of problem free riding with the peace of mind that I have a much simpler system to deal with, I feel it was a worthwhile investment for me.
My '00 FLTRSEI is still running well at 160,000 (Stage II from the factory,) and when the ECM finally goes I'll install the S&S replacement ECM designed for it.
Magnetti Marelli fuel injection is a long established brand still used in European machines from Ferrari to MotoGuzzi. The S&S ECM would be a no brainer to me.

Yes, Magnetti Marelli makes some of the worlds best EFI systems, but apparently what they built for Harley wasn't quite world class. The S&S was what I replaced mine with, but in my case, the ECM wasn't the actual problem. The S&S ECM is a huge improvement over the OEM that it replaces and looked like a perfect upgrade.
