Is anyone else out there still struggling with an old Magneti-Marelli EFI system that won't idle or has poor throttle response? I finally pulled the trigger and replaced mine with the S&S VFI system. All I can say is WOW! This is how my bike should have been running when it was new.
Geoff - This post couldn't come at a better time. I have owned my 2000 Road King Classic with MM EFI for only one season. This spring I fired her up and it has a low idle...around 700 rpm. I research this and find that eratic idle is a common problem with MM EFI and hard to correct so now I am beginning to worry. This problem comes at a bad time because soon I plan on putting on my new CFR slip-ons to replace my V&H basic slip-ons and I anticipate that I will need to tune the bike so I am looking for options. I have finally made a decision and have decided that this week I will buy the dobeck TFI as the tuning module for my bike. But now I see this post...............
The S&S website does not tell much about the product nor can I find much online about it. CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE VFI? Is it just another tuning module like the dobeck or PCIII or does it replace the MM EFI? What else can you tell me?
Like 2nd Mike said, the S&S system totally replaces the M/M. It wasn't cheap, ($1900 installed and tuned) but the upside is after the upgrade, you don't need a tuning module. Later mods like cams, big bore kit, or even building a stroker can all be tuned by any S&S dealer.
Yeah, it wasn't cheap, but after fighting with the M/M EFI for the last 6 years I was fed up. Every spring I needed to reset the hot/cold idle because the bike didn't like to start and would idle at 900rpm or less when it was cold. When it got hot it would climb over 1200... Plus last year it started to develop a hiccup when I'd hit the throttle off the line. With over 103,000 miles, it was time to do something. I love the bike, just couldn't handle that old EFI and it's gremlins any longer...
My Indy told me about that same price to go to Carb, I am waiting to see more on the new Cobra Fi2000 PowrPro. From what I can tell this could solve a lot of issues & "according" to the website is for my year bike.
Carlgrover, That module as well as intake manifold, injectors, fuel rail, throttle body, air cleaner and wiring harness.
Why did you replace everything???? I thought the big plus of the VFI was to use stock wiring and induction.
Just found about the VFI as I'm in the process of gathering all the stuff to convert from MM to carb. Looks a lot easier than all the other work and at 600 for the module, about the same price. But not at nearly 2K for what you did.
