Tach problem

The tach on my 03 Heritage Classic went crazy yesterday. I have the HD mini tach mounted. It was just all over the place. I think the problem also triggered a code cuz my check engine light stated blinking shortly after the tach problem started. I have ordered an electrical diagnostic manual but who knows when it will get here. Just looking for some help in the meantime. Suggestions on what to check? Does anyone have the procedure for retrieving codes for an 03 Softail? Any help appreciated.

I would try and check your ground on the battery.
Or you might want to check to see if there is a loose ground wire.
