I have a 1995 FXSTC I havea Crane Fireball ignition, Crane 300 grind cam an S&S super E. I went on what i would call a parade run last sunday, oil in the tank got up too 250 degrees. Changed the oil and spark plugs last night went too start it starter made a noise like it had a dead battery (the clicking noise) and a puff of smoke came out from under the seat. Now the starter doesn't make a sound totally dead. I got it started by having a push jump start. Rode it down the street coming back to the house it started sputtering and back firing running like hell had to nurse it to the garage. My question is can anyone help me figure out where to start ? Is it the Voltage regulator, Starter, Ignition, battery or something else I havent even thought of yet. Any help will be very much appreciated, Thanks for looking. Im also going to post this under the electrical section of the forums but I figured i'd start with the EVO section first.
I would go for the obvious and easiest to check. The battery.
If the battery shorted out it could have:
Caused the smoke
Caused no starter activity since there's no voltage
Caused the bike to run poorly since the battery was sucking power from the alternator and therefore not letting the plugs get a good voltage to spark.
Oil temp: I would say that 250 especially in a parade is quite normal.
I don't know where the starter relay (solenoid) is on that bike. If it's under the seat or wherever that puff of smoke came from that would be the first thing I would check. I don't think I'd just replace it and try that first, though. It could have been low voltage, for whatever reason, that caused it to fail. Or it might just have given up the ghost all on its own. But the other troubles you mention would lead me to investigate the alternator and/or voltage regulator. Again, nothing specific to offer on your particular hardware. I've never even looked at one of those.
