I have to replace my starter, again. Last year I rebuilt a replacement starter and it has broke again. This was a high torque 1.4k replacement I don't remember what brand. I don't want to use this one again and end up doing the job every year.
Does anyone recommend a specific brand replacement starter?
I have a 1997 FLSTC with anall stock engine.
Finally got the starter in 2 weeks ago. Since I am new to this, I had some problems.
First off, getting the oil tank off, I did not see the bracket bolted to the back of the battery housing.
Secondly, the starter I took off was an aftermarket starter and was different than the replacement one I purchased.
The first difference was the previous starter had a reverse or female gear at the end and did not need a coupling to attach to the jackshaft. So, I had to get the coupling from HD.
Secondly, the bolt on the primary side was too short after installing the new starter. Luckily the new starter came with a longer one that I used. However, this caused me to go back, remove the oil tank, take the starter off and check everything again.
I must have taken the oil tank on and off about 6 times while doing this. Just a learning process I guess.
I am on the road again and just did my longest haul to date. A 200 mile adventure up to the catskills and back to LI. Sweet ride up the Taconik parkway and some back roads to boot.
