In a discussion with the service department about heat management, it was suggested that I consider installing a race tuner on my 2008 Ultra. Can someone educate me as to what this would do?
The Screamin Eagle Race Tuner is simply a communications link to your bike's Electronic Control Module that allows the bike's a/f, timing, etc. to be changed from the OEM values (which are very lean for EPA emissions compliance)--so, the race tuner isn't "installed" like a set of mufflers; it simply allows the a/f, ignition timing, etc. to be changed using a pc or laptop.
The heat issue is primarily a function of the lean a/f settings; fuel help cools the air-cooled V-twin, but for EPA compliance the OEM a/f is very lean. The SERT and aftemarket alternatives richen the a/f thus cooling the motor.
very true, if you replace the pipes with duals you will remove a lot of heat by removing the right side rear pipe. Install the SE air cleaner or the one of your choice. Use the tuning file for racing exhaust and the SE air cleaner and you will notice a significant reduction in heat. I had the V&H fuel pak and had them (dealer) remove it and install the SERT.
