Here comes a dumb(maybe) question! This comes from reading all the threads on efi tunning. I have a '98 ULTRA. The motor is basically stock and had Sampson megaphone slip on mufflers on it with few other performance modifications. I had a motor job done this past summer. the motor was tuned to to the new specs(the sampson mufflers, a slightly more agressive cam). I have recently installed a set of Rush slip ons with 1 3/4 bores. My question is - Do I need to reprogram and if I do, what is the best programmer to use. any help will be appreciated. I would like to make any adjustments before the riding season begins up here in northern wisconsin.
Unless they have the same map, you should have to re-tune it.
The two most popular are the SERT(screaming eagle race tuner) or the PCIII(Power commander 3).
Did you do the work yourself or did you have someone do it?
Since you are going from slip-ons to slip-ons I would not re-map until I rode the bike to see how it performed. If you were going from stock exhaust to slip ons I might remap. But there might not be enough of a backpressure difference between 2 sets of slip on style mufflers to make a real noticible difference.
The best thing to do is put in a new set of plugs, ride a couple of hundred miles and then "read" the plugs. If the plugs are kinda white or blistered, or the bike just seems to lag, then you may want to add a tuner. A simple DFO will do all that you need to do.
Any aftermarket cam has substantially more duration than stock. I would think reprogramming of EFI would be a necessity, unless the EFI was screwed up in the first place. Be aware that your EFI is markedly different than the current bikes' EFI.
