I have been told both ways so I am paranoid now because I first lost my ecm due to an adapter using a laptop, have been using a pc without problem till this past weekend when I lost it again,I've been told the trickle charger being connected was my latest reason, but in the past have been told bike battery must be on tender while loading in order to not lose power, just don't want any more problems.
Mike
I think someone (the who that told you you need a trickle charger hooked up) is guessing. I've pushed maps to my bike without any problems. Unless you have a bum battery you should not need to have it hooked up to a charger.
You need a good battery charged to normal loads on both the bike and laptop.
In I bet 75 times of doing this with my bike loading or recording I only once had a problem. Hung up on 25%. I think I hurried too much flicking the computer, its an old one.
The book says if this happens and not over 30% loaded nothing changes. If more, just do over.
You cannot load the ECM with anything except a, "saved", program. so it's not really lost.
I also save to a floppy or two incase anything happenes to my old laptop. Would be lost then and in a world or hurt. Then I put that on myWife's computer also.
But I'm paronoid. Anybody not paronoid is crasy as a hoot.
I unplug the headlight fuse. That way I don't have both H4's on my RG pulling on the battery while I upload a map. The fuse box is right there anyway, easy enough to lift the headlamp fuse and plug it back in later.
every tuner I have ever used in the doc's has said keep your laptop plugged into 120v power while uploading to the ecm
Must be something to it if all different tuners say the same thing
That is correct. You should never load the map into your ECM from a laptop running only on it's battery power. The laptop should always be plugged into A/C power (120V) with it's adapter. Also there would be no reason to have your battery hooked to a trickle charger, if it can't tolerate being turned on for a couple of minutes at the most to load the map then you have crap battery and it needs to be replaced.
