'03 missing bad - diagnostic codes?

'03 missing bad - diagnostic codes?
Have an ’03 ultra that starting missing and losing power this weekend after a short ride. \\; The further I went, the worse it got. \\; I got back home, but with very little power. \\; The check engine light will come on when the popping is occurring but it goes back off at idle. \\; After start-up, engine light is telling me there is a historical problem but not a current problem.  \\;

I found the link on the forum here on how to check codes on an ’03 by jumping across terminals 1 &\\; 2 of the diagnostic plug under the right side cover, but I’m not getting any codes to flash. \\; Is it right to get no codes at all? \\;

BTW the missing started after fueling up, so I drained the tank and put fresh gas in. \\; I let it run in the shop for 10-15 minutes to let any old fuel get out of the pump and it ran fine. \\; But when I shut it off to back it out for a road test and restarted it, the problem came back. \\; I have the basic service manual and just ordered the electrical manual yesterday. \\; Any thoughts on the codes or potential culprits?
