Tach needle bounce
Was just seeing if anyone has had this,my tach has been on for 5 yrs.I have triple checked all wires.the thing is when my bike goes up in rpm anything past 4000 the needle jumps around, like 4000-43000 4000-45000 and I stay at the same rpm it works great from 0-4000.I have lived with it just wanted some feedback..thanks

I'm inclined to think the tach is defective, but it could be over-voltage at high rpms. The faster the engine speed the more power put out by the alternator and that may be overwhelming the voltage regulator at high engine speeds. Maybe use a digital multimeter that will capture peak voltage to monitor the power to the tach.

I put a Harley Tach on my '99 XL883 and it worked for a few years and then it started the bouncing thing similar to what you have described. I have a '07 XL883 that has a Harley Tach and I put it on the '99 and it didn't bounce at all. I purchased another Harley Tach and mounted it on the '99 XL883 and it works just like it should. I think I remember the counter guys at the Harley dealer telling me that Harley only warrants the Tachs for about three months or six months and the Black ones were much more expensive than the Chrome ones were by almost $100.00. Your Tach is probably broken and will need to be replaced. Sorry.
