Should a programming failure occur, donât panic! The Harley-Davidson ECM is a very robust unit, and will recover from virtually all programming failures!
Programming failures may occur for various reasons:
¡ Failure to wait 10 seconds after the ignition is turned on before starting programming
¡ The programming cable is knocked loose or there is a bad connection to the vehicle or PC
¡ The vehicle ignition is turned off during programming
¡ The vehicle battery goes dead during programming
¡ The PC is shut-down or the program is exited during programming
¡ Other Windows programs running in the background while programming
¡ A screen-saver starts or power-save mode is entered during programming
Programming Failure Messages:
If ECM programming fails, always make a note of any error messages and the percentage completed reading. Should it become necessary, this information will aid Harley-Davidson in diagnosing the problem. Make sure all the items on the above list are addressed before trying again.
If a programming failure occurs, the following message will be presented:
Programming Error Dialog
Tuning Mode internally stores information that is required to complete the ECM Programming process. DO NOT exit the Tuning Mode program until you have tried the following options:
¡ Verify the cable connections are secure and retry the operation
¡ Cycle the vehicle ignition power, wait 10 seconds and retry the operation
¡ Disconnect the battery, wait 10 seconds and retry the operation
¡ Exit the programming window, reload the tuning file and retry programming
If tuning Mode is exited after a programming failure and the ECM has NOT been successfully programmed, it may be necessary for your Harley-Davidson dealer to recover the ECM using Digital Technician.
If Tuning Mode exited without a successful recovery, The following warning message is presented:
Recovery Mode Warning Dialog
If you must exit Tuning Mode under these circumstances, you should attempt reprogramming at a later time prior to contacting the dealer, as the ECM still may be recoverable using Tuning Mode.
Diagnosing programming problems using Get ECM Info:
The Get ECM Info button can be used to diagnose communication problems and verify the ECM program status. Refer to Reading ECM Information.
After a programming failure, there are three possible responses to Get ECM Info:
¡ Normal Readout of VIN and CAL ID values
¡ Get ECM Info reports that it cannot communicate with the ECM
¡ VIN and CAL ID report out as "Not Found"
Normal Readout of VIN and CAL ID:
If the programming failure occurred at 30% or less, the ECM âflashâ memory is not erased and the vehicle should start and run after cycling the battery power (see Recovery Procedure 1). The new calibration will not have been downloaded to the ECM and the user will have to retry the programming.
If this condition occurs, Get ECM Info will report normal VIN and Read CAL ID values.Note that not all vehicles use the VIN number, so this field may be empty or have odd-looking values present (as illustrated here). Get ECM Info Normal Readout
Get ECM Info reports that it cannot communicate with the ECM:
If the programming failure occurred at 30% or higher, the ECM has been placed into a programming mode and may not respond to any "normal" requests for information.
If this condition occurs, Get ECM Info reports "Not Found" when reading the three ECM Information items. To restore communications, the ECM must be âresetâ by removing power using Recovery Procedure 2 Get ECM Info Cannot CommunicateReadout
After Recovery Procedure 2, the ECM will come back on-line, but if the flash has been erased the VIN and CAL ID will report out as "Not Found" (see below).
VIN and CAL ID report out as N
