Thanks for the replies. I think I may try winding out a little more between gears.....or maintaining 4th instead of 5th at times and see if that reduces what I am hearing. I am having a tach installed this weekend and that will probably help me better understand. I think I may be guilty of lugging it at times in 5th, then rolling on it and "causing" the noise.
Not sure what the mystery is. Sounds to me like you're definitely pinging. You have a PC III and down loaded map, so you're timing is either off or you're running a bit lean in certain areas. Doesn't sound like you're far off, but you should be able to work it out.
The times I've lugged and/or had bad gas and the motor "pinged" it sounds like pea gravel bouncing off of the frame. The pinging will most noticable on acceleration. Switch gas stations to one which moves more of their premium gas and downshift to the next lower gear.
It really shouldn't be pinging at idle. Have you gotten off of the bike and checked for the source? One nuisance noise I had was a metal "jingling" noise at a certain engine RPM and MPH. I finally found it was the windshield spring vibrating enough to rattle against the metal mount. Because I had to meet the certain ride conditions to make it "jingle" it was hard to locate the source.
I've got a similar sound that drives me nuts and, of course, the dealership says its a normal sound. I've heard air cooled engines before and expect increase valve noise. It should get quieter as it heats up.
In my case, I've only got 300 miles and it's been making what I almost call a 'ringing' sound all the time. It's louder at speed and increases with throttle. It's actually louder than my exhaust at speed.
I sat down next to the engine while idling and noticed a faint 'puff-puff' sound making me wonder if there isn't a leak of compression in the front cylinder. Not heard at the back cylinder. It worries me that the dealership says this is just normal sounds for a HD engine. Just doesn't sound right to me.
Any suggestions to take to another local dealership to help them problem solve?
