Default Dead battery killed something else....

I accidentally left my key engaged overnight and killed the battery. I charged it up the next day. Now when I turn the key, I no longer get that nice little whine sound (fuel pump, I believe). I get a loud almost wheezing sound (only way to describe it). When I hit the start switch, it gives that initial grunt like it's about to turn over but never does. One time I tried it smelled like something got burnt.

Any ideas before I call the dealer? Bear in mind, I'm a total n00b when it comes to working on bikes. It's a 2007 Sportster Custom 1200.

Maybe the fuel pump burned up.

That's my concern. But would leaving the key on cause that kind of damage?

did you charge your battery on your bike? If so, what did you use?

I charged the battery using my trickle charger. I tested the voltage and confirmed it has a full charge, so the battery appears fine. It holds the charge even after a week of sitting out of the bike. I'm worried I'm looking at a very expensive fuel pump fix.
