closed loop system?
Different parts of the AFR map are closed loop or open loop. This is a typical AFR MAP for the new bikes with O2 Sensors.
The areas in red are closed loop areas controlled by the O2 sensors. HD uses Switching type Narrow Band O2 sensors.
The areas in white are Open loop. The Open Loop AFR is controlled by feedback from various other sensors (the O2 sensors don't come into play in Open Loop) and the VE tables.
Setting a cell to anything other than 14.6 will cause that cell to run Open loop.

Thanks, but there are plenty on here more knowledgeable than me.
You are all talking greek to me. I have so much to learn about these systems it's ridiculous, but thanks for sharing the knowledge
Any cell that you change from 14.6 will no longer be controlled by the O2 sensors and will be Open Loop.

If I want to put on new A/C and pipes on 2010 Heritage Classic, would XIED be sufficent? Would it run it in open loop always? Anything bad about that? Don't mean to hijack thread. This stuff is SOOO confusing. Thanks.
Sufficient is a judgment call only you can make. In order to be sure to be sufficient you need to spend about $450 for something like the TTS tuning kit. There are a lot of riders riding with plenty of smiles and enjoyment, however, with nothing more than pipes and an air filter for style. The XIEDs will help reduce engine heat abit, if that bothers you, but does not do much more, especially open loop. Its a minor adjustments that you could very well be satisfied with. Many riders are. It depends how picky you are.
Personally, I tried the XIED and my bike ran better but I found I needed something more sophisticated to eliminate decell pop (you will get that with pipes) and the surging. The TTS kit had everything I needed short of a pro tuner's experience and skill. The kit should be sufficient for a street ride unless you want that last 1 -2 HP. Then you are off to hire an expert for professional advice.
If your intention by adding pipes and airfilter is to add performance rather than style (nothing wrong with style), then you need to do more research. You need more than an XIED to get the most out of those parts.
