Default Starter pull

I have a friend who has a mid years evo. His starter is pulling about 300 to 400+ amp instead of under 200 amps.
He gets a reading of 100 amps on the pos cable WITH THE NEG CABLE UN-HOCKED from the battery.
He has replaced the battery and had the starter rebuilt. What could be the problem?

It is impossible to draw 100 amps with one of the battery cables disconnected. Either the amp-meter is bad, incorrectly hooked up or being read wrong. Some induction amp meters require you to shift the decimal point over when used with a multi-meter. Is it a current shunt style or is it an induction meter who's output is a voltage based scale.

I agree. But I saw it. That is what gets me, I know it shouldn't do that. On other bikes it reads zero. Meter reads amps and sets on the cable.

Hand held amp-meters that straddle the cable like a horse saddle can pick up stray magnetic fields and are very inaccurate. The fact you said you were pulling 400+ amps from a 19 amp/hour battery also indicates to me your meter is not telling the truth. Sure you might pull 400 amps across one of these batteries but you would have to drop a piece of plate steel across the 2 battery posts to do it. Even a locked rotor condition probably would not pull that much current. If I understand you correctly, there are no cables attached to the negative pole of the battery. None what-so-ever. If that is true, your meter may indicate that there is 100 amps flowing but I assure you there is not.
