Why do I read that so many people like to tune their engine on their own? It seems like a very time consuming, difficult process which is more of an educated guess than anything. Why not take the motorcycle to a tuner and let an experienced technician dyno it? I am assuming prohibited cost or availability of good tuning techs?
Most guys love to tinker. O2 and data logging equipment is readily available and cheaper than ever now too.
There is a shortage of really good tuners in my opinion. Most tuners go cross eyed when you ask them to give you good gas mileage too. They think that there is a trade off between power and fuel efficiency. That is only true when the engine recipe is not good or you are only interested in performance.
Wide open throttle tuning is the easiest and smallest part of tuning an engine. Why not give a customer what he paid for; a good running engine, good gas mileage and all the power possible within the limitations of that engine recipe.

Some techs would like you to believe that adjusting the clutch, replacing brake pads, or even oil changes are difficult and time consuming too.
Tuning, with the right program(s) and a bit of knowledge, can be done by many and the results with today's modern software are pretty good in as little as three or four dedicated hours.
Thank you that has helped me understand. I will probably start saving for the mastertune as my next purchase. Then a set of cams.
FWIW, I purchased the TTS Mastertune a couple years ago. With no knowledge of tuning, I spent a few days reading the included HELP files and successfully tuned my '08 UC.
While it took some time to go through the entire process the first time or two, I can now do 3 or 4 data runs, blend data, and generate new maps in as little as four hours using a laptop.
While I have done no other mods to the stock motor and exhaust, I think the bike performs and behaves much better in its stock configuration and TTS system. On the plus side, I can make some significant mods and still use the TTS system...it will grow along with the bike's changes.
