I have a 2003 FLHT with the original battery. I bought the bike new. I have used a battery tender on the battery every year. I installed a new harness on the battery last week and the bike started fine. I plugged the battery tender in last nite, and used it for the first time this season. I went out to ride the bike this afternoon. I unhooked the battery tender, turned on the ignition, the on/off switch, the stereo and all the instruments came on, and then I hit the starter. As soon as I hit the starter, I heard a click and everything went dead on the dashboard. I have no power to anything. When it comes to anything electrical I'm a big dummy, so I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me on this problem. Could it be I need a new battery?, the battery tender? or could it be something bigger? Thanks in advance for any help.
I would suggest buying a service manual so you can check everything if you dont want to take it to a dealer.
The problem needs to be checked with a volt meter. It could be the battery,connections,etc-.
The "click" may have been a breaker tripping out. Have you tried to re-start it since? They should reset by themselves, unless they are weak and need replacing. If the battery checks out ok, that is where I would look.
Priest fan, check the connections to your battery and also to ground. Wiggle the battery cables with the ignition turned on. If everything comes back on you have a bad connection. With the seat off hit the start button and see if you get a spark either on the battery or the ground that will indicate where the bad connection is. Also your battery cables may be corroded internally. They will look ok on the outside but can be bad under the insulation. If every thing is ok with cables and connections, remove the battery and have it load tested at any auto parts store or your HD dealer. Hope this helps ya...........................BG
The more I re- read your post the more it sounds like the harness you installed is the culpret. I think you will find a bad or loose connection.....................BG
The click might have been a fuse blowing (if not a breaker popping). I agree that since you just put a new harnes on the battery that is most likely where the problem is. Look for any wires that might have gotten pinched and are shorting out. Before replacing expensive stuff like a battery, check all the fuses and replace any that have blown, then correct the problem that is causing it to blow. When you have an electrical problem, it is usually wise to start looking in the area of the most recent work you've done.
Thanks to everyone for your replies. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer. You guys put me on the right track. I finally had time to mess with the bike today. I started by checking the battery tender harness and it seemed okay. Next, I checked the connection to the terminals. They seemed tight, but I was able to tighten'em up a little more. I turned on the ignition and I had power. But, now the problem is I don't have any power to my radio. I'm running a Sony deck with the Biketronics set-up. The Sony manual shows a fuse(10A) located on the back of the deck. I have a day-off Friday, so I'm going to take the outer fairing off and check the fuse on the radio. Thanks again for all of your help, it's greatly appreciated by this dummy.
I have an 06 Dyna and when I went to crank it this morning I got one turn of the starter, then a click, and everything went dark. I didn't have time to check anything because I had to go in to work. But it's dead. I added a harness extension 4 months ago for my apes, but, it has been working beautifully. Other than that, the only electrical stuff I've done as been the installation of a DFO/TFI and a sidemount license holder that just tapped in to the rear harness. Both of which were done early 2006 and have never caused an issue.
Any advice on where to start? I'm not really electrically savvy enough to follow wiring diagrams and such.
