71 static time

71 static time
i have resently bought a 73 flh runs great the starter is coming off so it will be kick only, so i need the electronic ing spot on, it has a mallory e spark on it i am trying to static time it, my manual only tells me how to light time it, i dont have one, i have a light test (clip one end light prob on other).
a friend of mine static his 80 flh so we are trying it the way he did his,
got it top DC on front compression stroke checked fly wheel
retarded the EI (his is a dyna)
turn on key
clip to the single leed on coil pac touch probe to case (he got no light)
rotate EI till light comes on
locked it down
kick to life, first kick every time
now my problem, when i do this the light stays on all the time, i can move it to retard or advance, not be top DC, no matter what i do the light stays on unless i turn the key off or unplug the spark plug wires
so what am i doing wrong, i am a noob to this so please dont get to techqual on me and i wont to be able to work on my owne bike thanks chris
