Dead battery
My battrey died in my 2008 fatbob. i got a new battery,the next day the engine and battery light on the display panel came on. now the new battery is dead too. how can i avoid taking it to the dealer??

There may be a problem with the charging system that the dealer can diagnose (or any reputable mechanic can). If you can get the bike started and running you may be able to test the charging output with a multimeter. Check the voltage regulator, stator, etc. Replacing the stator, at least for me, is a 'pay someone else' event... I think there are a bunch of posts on testing the various items - including the battery.
There are also charging system meters that you can put on the bike to keep an eye on things before they go south.

Glenn I just went through the exact same thing with my bob. The manager at HD told me when those two lights come on at the same time it was my voltage regulator. However it turned out to be my stator. Make sure, as gork said, to have it tested to find out exactly what the problem is before repalcing anything. It just may be that your old battery was still good, just not chargeing.
