Default IT'S ALIVE!!

After much help from Blake (Piniongear) and some local people, the old Ironhead is alive! Finally got the seat installed (if I *ever* do that again it'll be too soon), all the wiring ran, and a test fire.

Of course being Wisconsin (and my luck<g&gt, I rolled the idling bike to the garage door....just to have the skies open and a downpour and lightning storm hit...gah.

Hopefully the rain will be done by tomorow night so I can take this thing out and give 'er a good "welcome back" break in. Sat on 'er, lovin' the new seat, the bike is lower, but, the seat actually sits me higher on the bike (good news for bad hips) so hopefully by the end of the week there'll be a couple hundred miles under my belt again and she and I can get reaquainted.

Wolf, I am soooo stoked right now.

(pictures will follow when I can actually get the thing outside and a good buff job on the new clear)

LoL wellllllll, as soon as I can get it back off the jack I'll be posting some. Come to find out there's an important part that missing off my bike that's been missing since I bought it. There's a friggin spacer with a shoulder that goes between the brake drum and the swingarm on the Anchor Bolt...mine's gone and it sends my rear wheel off in different directions. Never noticed it last year, but, we're now thinking that's what took out my rear tire, stress from having the wheel cocked off to the right because the anchor bolt was tightened with no spacer to keep it straight.

I swear this bike is jynxed...I'm naming it Christine. If it doesn't end up killing me it's at least gonna drive me crazy.

So if you know anyone who's got a '70's Sporty that's a junker but still has that part let me know. If I order it from VTwin it's a minimum 2 month wait so I'm going to see what I can make in the meanwhile to at least get me on the road.

Wolf, so dang frustrating

Sam...
Does the spacer you need show up on the attached jpeg? If so, let me know which item it is that you need. I could make you one out of aluminum if I can get some dimensions on the piece..........pg

Heya Blake,
Yeah, it's part 6A. For some reason in my manual it says it's for '73 only, ut, my manual is wrong. I went and looked at a '76 today and it has that same spacer. Basically a large fender washer with a deep collar that slides into the swingarm between the brake drum and the swing arm.
I'd imagine that your '71 has one as well altho it's hard to tell on your picture. It'd be the bolt right in front of the axle, I need that spacer.

If you can make one that'd be absolutely awesome, just let me know the cost and shipping.

Won't cost you a cent and don't worry about shipping. Your bike has item 5a and 6a, where mine has item 5 & 6. Mine does not use a 5a (which is a bolt) because it uses a nut instaed of a bolt.
I will look at mine and see if I can figure out some dimensions to attempt to make one for you. Can you tell me what is the diameter of that 5a bolt? I need to fit the spacer to that and of course provide a flat to fit into the swingarm frame slot. I will do that this weekend and get back to you when it's finished.......pg

Could you not just pile a few flat washers together? God, your bike is drivingME crazy, as well as the lack of pics. GET IT ON THE ROAD ALLREADY.

Just kidding, sort of. Be safe but be quick about it.

PG, good luck with the part.
Hope you get him on the road soon.

Blake,

That'd be absolutly perfect. I believe the bolt is a 3/8" for diameter. I'll check against a tape measure when I get home from work.

Thanks a ton,

Wolf

Wolf.....
Here is what mine looks like, along with some dimensions of my slot. You can see how large my slot is. I think your slot will be smaller because:
Your bolt #5a caps the slot. Instead of a bolt, mine uses a stud (#10) and then a nut (#5) goes on that. The flats on the nut do not even come close to the frame slot This nut sits entirely inside the slot and the spacer washer behind it (#6) has the flats cut into it and fits the 1 inch high slot of the swingarm.

If you can, in addition to the bolt size, also give me the dimensions of your slot...measured in the same two places I have noted on mine.
Right now I am thinking your slot heigth will be the same as your #5a bolt diameter.......pg
