Sounds like the shifter arm has broken or the pin that holds it to the shaft has sheared.
You'll need to pull the transmission to find out exactly what's wrong, so my advice is to get the Factory Service Manual and a Factory Parts Manual to engage any further.
This makes everything about doing a job like this a LOT easier.
You can also find a good, reputable independent that will work on an Iron Sporty to fix it for you,but be prepared to pay $$$.

What gear was it in?
Before you do anything internal, check that the gear lever is not hitting the footpeg mount on the upstroke before the gearbox has fully shifted to the next higher gear. If so, move the gear leaver down by one spline on the shaft. This is a common problem with 77 and onward Ironheads.
