Ive been restoring a 1982 ironhead for a few months now. This is my first major restoration and i realized im missing a part that i can't seem to find online. Its the computerized ignition module, it goes between the ignition coil and the points. It seems like they only make them for post 1990's models, are they universal or does it have to be specific to my year? I've heard it would be smart to convert it to a single fire kit but for now im only looking for the module. Anything about it helps. thanks!
First off, the ignition module replaces the points, it's not installed between the coil and points. For Sportsters, electronic ignition systems first appeared in 1979. The original factory system installed in my '82 is still working fine.
There are several different after market electronic ignition systems available from vendors like J&P Cycles. If you go to their website and type in the year, make, and model of your bike, it will show the different types of electronic ignition systems they sell.
A lot of guys like the Ultima system, which I'm not seeing on the J&P site.
IMO the Ultima electronic ignition is the best choice for any Sportster. At $170.00 it is a bargain - much better than trying to refurbish what was the original ignition for your IronHead.
