cool idea.
i was thinking of same thing for my 81 ironhead, the rear pulley for mine should not be a problem with the cast wheel and disk, for the front am thinking of machining down the old sproket to fit in to a pulley then weld it, i am sure i will be spending a little money with a chance for failure but i want to try.

ya know, im surprised they dont make a conversion kit for these bikes already. I'd buy one if they did. it'd be nice to have a belt drive on the sporty. eliminate that dang noisy old chain that ya gotta maintain!
For the early Evo Sportsters that have the chain, it is quite common to convert to belt. I would guess that a kit is available. If not then it is a matter of determining what parts/process are needed and to then just do it.
Yes sir when i start i will take many photos and post them, i have a machine shop i can work with. Look it could be that am wrong, but this has been done before by others so i dont see it as imposible, and yes i want to keep the bike as original as posible, now the only way to do that is by making changes that are not permanet, i just took my horn bracket from the left side of the engine and placed the same bracket on the regulator mount and relocated my horn, i can see the left side of the motor now, and in less than a half hour put everything back to original.
So in the case of the belt drive it will probably involve a custom cover for the front sprocket, and an existing belt kit from a later model sporster. If i even play with it i will have detail parts and measurements, but the custom cover i would mill out of aluminum on a CNC, so that will take a small program. never know if it works i could talk with the forum gods about them providing the cover for everyone, just some ideas, but i will NOT MAKE PERMANENT CHANGES TO THE BIKE and all original parts will be preserved for future generations to enjoy with the machine.
Has anyone given any thought to starting an Ironhead Social Club?
I think it would be cool, i am not bragging but when i ride my old bike i get so many complements, it is equally divided 50/50 guys and girls. but it will be a place to share more ireas, dont know?
Scott. we actually believe we have winter here in Houston, and tomorrow we are expecting a sunny and 64, so everyday i find a little excuse to take the bike out
yah yah yah..lucky dogs yinz are! lol here in PA they use SALT on the roads..thus, i dont get my bike out till PENNDOT runs the brush's and blowers to clean up the roads a bit. Salt would just eat the crap outta the old bikes. all that nice ole metal and fancy un-coated aluminum..oh yah..i could see it now.. lol Me in the garage with rags, the dremel, a mothers speed ball, and a **** pile of polish! uugghhh..lol

nothing I like better than a controlled drift thru the corners, but, after the winter there are too many corners like that with all the salt and sand used....so, I wait too.
One thing about winter here, it was sunny and 71 today 1/6/2011
the old ironhead likes the weather, motors make more power when the air charge is cold, that is why on your supercharger or turbo on your Mustang you want to run an intercooler, to keep it a little colder, so i was riding around and i swear that it felt like another 7 to 10 horsepower under the heads.
As this topic is so much "off topic" more alike weather channel :-P
Here what situation look here...14ş F fresh snow about 4 inch, again... forecast "promised" more snow on evening...
