Default E-Starter problems (Timing?)

I had a bad starter shaft. I replaced it today and still all I hear is whirl. I replaced the belkin gear and just ordered a new one.
The current belkin gear passes the hand test of spinning one way.

I have replaced bearings and shaft on this starter. It looks to be engaging. I will send pics ASAP.

Is there a timing thing I am missing?

What am I missing?

Thank you.

What is a BELKIN GEAR ????? Check the bracket the bendix sits in for free movement, it may be bent a little.

Ok. Belkin gear is the bendix gear. My bad. I will not make that mistake again. Thanks TST. Ok. I am going to take the primary cover off probably tomorrow morning and take a look. The clutch release ramp assembly exploded when I was working on the bike yesterday. So the bike is out this week.
I rode KTMs for the last 30 years. I bought this bike in the spring, my first Harley. I like the left hand shift and kickstart. I work with white collar and it annoys everyone in my parking garage. . I have rode it 3K since buying and I know it is old and things are going to happen. No complaints for the most part this has been a great purchase.

Thanks I will check it out tomorrow and add to this thread.

It also has been fun to bring something back. This bike was a rough non-runner with bald tires and rusty tank when I bough it.

It's a long road to get there but well worth it. Took me 3 1/2 years to restore my 77 XLH. The only work I farmed out was cylinder boring, valve seats & valve guides.

Be careful when the outer primary cover is removed, if you pull out on the pinion gear the starter solenoid will energize the starter motor, it could bite...Always remove negative cable before working around the pinion gear.

I've seen people lose fingers from not removing the battery cable before working on the starter. Or even just having the outer primary cover off and mistakenly pulling on the bendix which will cause the bendix to extend and engage the starter. That's when bad things happen to fingers etc. Be carefull.

Angry Looks like a bad new bendix gear

This is what I get buying one from amazon. Wish I saved the one I took out.
