Default Transmission stuck in 4th

Hey all. I'm new to the Forum so please bare with me. My '70 Sportster is stuck in 4th gear. I had no indications that the trans was unhappy. I was about 20 minutes into my ride and I was unable to downshift. I actually was in 3rd gear when I realized I had a problem, up shifted into 4th and there it stayed. The clutch engages and disengages like normal, so i was able to limp it home. The shifter pedal moves freely up and down and will return to it's home position without aproblem. I didn't hear or feel anything out of the ordinary before I realized there was a problem The former owner had the same problem andhad it repaired, but can't rememberwhat was done to repair it.

That being said, does anyone have an idea what might be happening, or not happening, with my sad transmission?

Thanks in advance

My guess is that you have bent a shifter fork, or more likely, broken a shifter spring. In either case you will have to remove the clutch and pull the transmission door to inspect this. The entire transmission comes out attached to the backside of that door. Then you can see what broke.
To start with:
Are you familar with what you need to do and have some tools and the ability to use them?
Do you have a factory repair manual?
If you do not have a manual and/or do not know what needs to be done, let me know and I will try to help you out. You can email me and that way I can send you back some info via PDF, which is something I cannot do here on the forum........pg

pg- Thanks for the reply,

I just received my repair manual today. It's an original 1970 Sportster repair manual. It's nice, it matches the bike. (old) I do have a basic mechanics set of toolsand an assortment of pullers. I'vereplaced a few clutches and transmissions in my vehicles over the years, so I hope some of that will be useful.

I am going to start it tomorrow night so wish me luck. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks again for the help.

Ok, good luck with it and let us know if you need anything or have any questions.
Your machine was the last year to have a dry clutch, so be sure to keep the plates away from any oil while you have it apart. Reassemble, making sure oil does not get the plates wet and use the bonnet gasket and a new oil seal in the clutch hub.
There will be a call to use a transmission door pulling tool, but you do not need it. Just hit the counter shaft end on the right side to dislodge the door (with a hide mallet to protect the threads!) after the door bolts have been removed. This door sits on two large pins and a whack will dislodge it. The trans is attached to the door.
There are 23 needle rollers in the mainshaft cage on the right side. Some of these will fall into the case bottom when the shaft comes out.
Be sure to collect them and count them to make sure you have 23 when they go back into the cage at reassembly. I use a light grease to keep them in place and then carefully slide the mainshaft into place...........pg
