Hey all, first post on here so pardon any mistakes on this but Im actually looking to buy this 83 sportster from a guy but unfortunately he says he doesnt know that much about bikes so no idea on whats been rebuilt or replaced, I offered 3100 and he accepted the offer and sent me a video of a week ago it running and says it runs perfectly fine no leaks and would just need a new oil change and some brake adjustment since its been sitting and just being ran the last two years. The man is giving away all his motorcycle gear as well with the bike so Im just assuming hes not conning me hes just not riding anymore. Any input or advice on if this is a good deal, or yalls experience is with this year sportster is greatly appreciated, thanks yall.
Graci,
Looks very decent and well worth the price from what I see in the photos but nothing is for sure. That leaves about 2 dozen unanswered questions. As long as the basics are good such as decent compression , original condition, lack of damaged metal ( pitted aluminum ) and such your good to go. Put at least another 2 thousand aside to buy various necessities ( brakes, rebuild kits, etc. ) and you'll have yourself a classic ! I have the '82.
Good Luck
I wouldn't have offered anywhere near that price but since you've already done that it's water under the bridge. Now, the important thing to do when you pick this thing up is ask him for all of the stock parts he has that were removed. Mufflers, front fender, air cleaner, and whatever else he has. I would also take any gear he wants to give away, assuming he's about your size. Pass on the helmet though.
Hey guys thanks for the responses, and funny enough the next day after posting I reached out to him and told him after doing my due diligence I realistically couldn't pay out the 3.1 and told him I could do 2.3, told him if he wanted to try and sell it to someone else I would totally understand. He ended up selling to earlier today to another buyer, so I have been on the hunt for another Harley, thanks ya'll for the heads up!!
