well, after 3 years of tweaking and fixing and breaking and refixing, i just picked the bike up from inspection last night. took my first ever legal ride on the road with her.. boy she runs amazing!! a couple tweaks neededhere and there... tank spacers are loose and VERY noisy... a rubber grommet should fix that... lights on the guages are out.. sure its gonna be a chore finding those bulbs.. and the handlebars need to be tilted forward.
here is a question for you all... what is the max rpm you usually shift at? when cruising(casually up shifting), when maxing it out(accelerating), and when at top speed(which is?)
In normal cruise I upshift around 3500-4000rpm, maximum what I have used is 5500-6000.
Normally 4500-5000 is enough to get good acceration to beat evos, theese are old bikes respect them !
Bike runs +5000rpm even with 4th gear.... but that's no legal on streets
right on. thats the info i needed. at this point, the bike is the quickest thing ive ever driven, so im not worried about maxing it out, i just wanted to get a general idea since there isnt exactly a redline.... on the drive home i was actually shifting around 3000, which would put me to low in the next gear, but i really couldnt tell what was happening because my gastank spacers were rattling so loud that i couldnt hear the bike to well.
now i just have to figure out how to get these handlebars from shifting.. i bought un-knurled bars and need to find a way to either knurl them(dremel)(sandpaper) or get a piece of rubber in there or something. i was thinking of some sort of liquid rubber, just to get an even layer of "rubber" around the bars to add friction.. rubber cement maybe? lol.
Hey 69, if you can't find the bulbs locally try Sporty Specialties in Fullerton CA. He carries nothing but old sportster parts and I have gotten sone hard to find parts from him. His name is Kirk and the number is 714-879-0500. Good luck.
whats actually funny is that i had bought a bulb from jp.. compared it to the one i took out and thought, ahh, way off. must have gotten the wrong one.. last night when i was screwing with the handlebars, i realized that it was the correct one, its just the actual glass part is way smaller on the new one.. that fixed the speedo, and it turns out the tach light wasnt on because the socket had fallen out the back.. talk about good luck on that field. knock on particleboard covered in synthetic wood.
