I don't believe it is leaking from those places because it is coming from higher up on the motor. I see it running down the back of the primary cover to the right of the gasket about half way up. Ithink I may have found it. Not sure but maybe. I see oil under the starter selonoid. I believe it is leaking by the selonoid gasket (torn badly) and from behind the starter (no gasket and no bottombolt) I believe it was also leaking from behind the starter as well. The bike had a prestolite starter that broke and I had a hitachi starter given to me. The bolts are smaller and farther apart on the hitachi so in an attempt to get the bike running I clearanced one of the bolt holes on the free hitachi and got it to work but can only put the top bolt in or it will short out. so oil I believe is running from behimnd the starter. I hope....
That sounds like you found it. You need a good gasket and all holes filled with a bolt to prevent oil from the primary being thrown out. Glad it is not the stripped plugs I mentioned........pg
It'spouring oil when it's running, I didn't think that much would come from there. I hope that is the cause. Going to try to seal those up and see how it goes. I'll let you know...Piniongear, I don't know where you live but if you're ever in the Virginia Beach area I owe you a few beers Brother. Thank you
I am down in hot, humid, Houston TX Jimbo. Good luck with the sealing of the hole. A bolt, washer and nut should do it. Make sure you have clearance between the bolt head and the starter gear inside the primary area.
I'd be sure to put a good new gasket on it as well........pg
The BAT and GEN (sometimes marked ARM) terminals on the regulator will do nicely for polarizing the generator. If you find them hard to reach, you can use a linger wire and flash between the ARM (sometimes marked GEN or BAT) terminal on the generator and the + side of the battery. DO NOT flash the FLD terminal!
Well, I guess it's time for an update. I got a good gasket on the starter and starter selonoid and...no more oil leak. The bike is running pretty good engine wise. I had to read up on the carb and should have it running great tomorrow...now that I know to adjust the "idle adjustment screw". I hope the regulator is ok. I see in my Harley book of kung fu that with my multi meter I should be able to test it's function...I'll do my best but I'm an old Navy Senior Chief so I tend to over think everything.. I'll try to keep the questions to under 10. Thanks for all the help with this thing. I enjoy my Dyna but there is something about breathing life back into this old sporty...
