hey ya'll see if i an get some help here. I have a 75 xlh 1000 ironhead. just had the topend done 30 over, new pistons, ring, lifters all the good ****. new carb, (bendix) all new electrical, except ignition. my problem is, I go about 20 miles, and it shuts down, overheats. if i let it cool down, it;ll crank again. I just put a new coil and wires on ti. still overheating. any ideas, help please. im fed up with this ****.
If it runs fine and just shuts down dead after 20 miles, it could be a total loss of fuel supply, or a total loss of spark. Loss of fuel supply could come from a vapor lock due to heat, or maybe a gas cap vent clogged, or maybe even some crud in the float bowl or the main jet. Loss of spark could come from a defective condenser or coil that quits when it gets hot, or maybe some electrical problem.
If it really is overheating, this could cause a fuel vapor lock that would cause it to shut down. Overheating could be because of timing too far advanced, or too lean a mixture because of an intake leak, or a partly clogged or too-small main jet. This should definitely be fixed because it can damage your engine.
i was having a problem with a vapor lock, i put fat bob tanks on it, and it wasnt venting properly, if i leave the left cap loose it runs ok, but that it still an option i may look at somemore. also it is a brand new carb, what, never had this problem till i had it bored.
