Thanks to all everyone on this forum for starters, without your help my 73 ironhead wouldn't have made its first75 mile ride yesterday. Of course, problems came with it, one of my oil lines, that I ran to close to the pipes, melted shut, I made a roadside repair by cutting out the burnt part of the line and putting the metal tube, from a tire pressure gauge, where the damage was, the line was on the right side of the bike going in behind the cover on the kickstart side of the bike, running to the oil pan, now it seems there is no oil in the line. Is this a return line that maybe shouldn't have oil in it all the time, or is it a reason to put ridin on hold?
Don't run the engine until you have this oil line business solved and figured out.
I am a little lost regarding your description of which line has no oil.
So let me say the oil feed line comes from the very bottom of the oil tank and goes to the oil pump inlet on the rear of the pump. This line must always have oil in it.
There is another line that comes out of the engine using a brass 90 degree elbow. You cannot see this line unless you have the transmission/kick start cover off the bike. The elbow screws into the timing/cam gear compartment on the backside of the crankcase, just in front of the mainshaft sprocket.
That line is the vent line and goes to the upper area of the oil tank. This line will not have oil in it.
The 3rd and last line is the oil return line. This returns oil to the tank from the engine. This line may not have oil in it when the engine is not running. This line will always have oil in itwhen the engine is running. This line comes off a fitting near the base of the rear cylinder on the right hand side. The line connects to the oil tank at the upper area of the tank.....very much at the same elevation of the vent line.
Now, there is a qualifier in order here regarding the vent and return oil connections on the oil tank.....
If the tank is a center mount, the oil return and vent connections will be at the lower area of the tank and both have identical stand pipes inside the tank that go up above the normal oil level in the tank and both have open ends. The vent standpipe just...well, vents.
The oil return pukes the oil out the top of it's standpipe and you can look in the tank with the engine running and see the flow of oil on the surface. It's coming from that return standpipe, which you cannot view , as it is located on the farside of the oil tank.........pg.
thanks man, I'm not sure myself so, I'll wait. all I can say is when your sitting on the bike, the damaged line comes from the right side of the oil tank, there are three lines, all come from the bottem of the oil tank, one on the left side corner, one in the center closer to the back tire, and the damaged one that is in the right side corner, but I think I'll play this one safe, that was her first trip. again thanks pg
