Identity Crisis
The case that's off the bike is a 1957 case--the year is the first two numbers. I can't really read the numbers on the case on your bike, but it doesn't look as if there is room for a CH, but I'm not sure. Otherwise, the bike is generally consistent with a 67XLCH.
If it is a 67XLCH, the 57 case could help finance your restification (which is what I would probably do with that bike rathe than a restoration). Keep it fairly stock, upgrade where necessary, and have a nice period CH.
As Pinion Gear has already said, stay safe, come home soon, and keep us posted.
But I still remember the 1957 Sportster when it came out and it was about the coolest thing I had ever seen for a 13 year old who had his first real motorcycle (1949 BSA Shooting Star 500cc twin, after a series of Cushmans and a Mustang 3 speed.)
Then the XLCH came out in 1958. The CH is what made the '57 look dumpy to me. At the time I remember wondering how I could think that fat girl with the big tank and 18 inch tires had looked so cool before?
But the CH.......WOW! Here is a really lean and fast machine. I thought I would never be able to own one. That was far from what was to happen though. Those days were just majic for me, and the impression has stayed with me to this day. That's OK, I still like fat girls......pg
