Default another newbe question, will not start.

Ok so I have made a couple postswith different questions, but this one i really need help with. I bought a 75 xlch, bought on ebay, previous owner swears he rode the bike onto the truck to be sent to me, I got the bike last night, now I have never had a kick start so maybe im doing something wrong, but I kicked on this thing for 2 hours. I cant get it started to save my life. It has a edelbrock carb, drag pipes and kick only. I turned gas off, primed bike per the edelbrock directions, kick through twice, opened gas , turned key on and kicked like all mighty hell, over and over, and over again. never once sounded like it was going to start. has plenty of compression, has spark (it shocked the s@#$ out of me) when I pulled the plugs. It just doesnt seem like its igniting, theres not "firing sound". I am completly lost. this is my first harley, any sugestions, please!!!! Is it possible that the carb was damaged during shipment? It was on a truck for 17 days, and 3000miles. I talked to the previous owner, he told me how he started it, he also said it never took more than 3 kicks, he was quite convincing, I want to believe him. Once again desperate for help. thanks guys and gals. I already really like this forum. As far as my last post about the front end, It looks like the steering stem threads stipped out, bearings feel out. I will have to get a new lower tree, bearings and stem nut.

Turn the gas on and leave it on when starting. Remove the hose to the carb and make sure it is getting good clean gas. Have a friend cover the carb air intake while you kick it over to make sure it is sucking gas. Check the plugs to see if they are getting gas. Check the compression to see if the pushrods might need adjusting. Check all that stuff and see what happens. IIf it doesn't start you might even want to get on the web and contact Edelbrock.

If it were me I'd go to the parts house and buy a can of starter fluid. Get the bike ready to start and give a good spray down the carb throat. Kick it over and the engine should at least give you a good pop or better yet, start up. If it does not give any sign of life with the starter fluid, then you are going to have to find out what the problem is. And it will be a problem if the fluid does not light it off.
If it starts but soon dies, then look to the carb as the problem. As always, be careful of fire with an air cleaner removed.....pg

Did you try retarding the magneto? I used to have to do that on my 65.
