Ive searched high n low for a 18 inch rear wheel for my 72 and cant find anything.
I guess the big thing back then was to put a 16 inch wheel on to lower it a bit, but
what has happened to all the take offs? This is my first restore project and only HD parts will do.
Its been fun looking for the correct parts and have most everything to start, but a few odds n ends
still elude me..............................
If you are ever going to ride that thing you will have to use some aftermarket parts. Go with S&S, Barnette and Andrews. They are better than AMF parts anyway. When you order your wheel make sure you get stainless spokes not chrome. Chrome rusts.
Im going in the opposite direction, the s&s is coming off and stock bendix is goin back on, i have all the factory cables. It runs good now, bout 85% original. Ill find the right parts sooner or later, and youll swear it just came off the showroom floor when im done with it. No hurry to finish it, i have other bikes to ride............................
I found an 18" rear wheelthat fits a'57-'76 Sporty (andmaybe the '52-'56 K-model) on E-Bay....Got it for $90....It was an aluminum rim laced to the Sporty hub...a little rough around the edges but with some new bearings it will work fine. I've found some unbelievable deals on E-Bay..got a pair of STD forged 11:1 TRW pistons for a 900 for $40....Even came with some documentation on the piston clearances for fuel or gas...Little did I realize that TRW produced pistons for S&S in the early 70's thanks to the weathered literature....The pistons were still in the original boxes....the seller had been sitting on them for 30-years!
I hear ya, got a few good deals there too. Ive picked all my parts from there so far, right down to the
correct bolts, screws, and washers. If you spend a little extra time looking around the deals with the right
shipping prices are there.
