I just repalced my generator and voltage regulator on my 78. When I start it and measure the voltage it is 12.5-12.8 then when I raise the rpm's the charge doesntgo up any but it doesn't drop either, so am I ok with that or do I still have a problem? I am running a mechanical voltage regulator / points and only a headlight and taillight.
That 12.5 to 12.8 reading might be coming from your battery, not the generator.
I suggest you test the generator output following the instructions below. If you need an ampmeter just pick up one at an auto parts house. A small 0-30 amp meter will do it (like car buffs install with a oil pressure gage or a temp gage) below the dash.
Getting the amperage reading from the generator output will tell you if the generator is working OK...........pg
