Default primary oil

Ok I need to know what oil you recommend for the primary & tranny on my 77? I've got one manual that says 90wt one that says the same as the engine plus some other opinions. Thanks

30wt non-detergent motor oil has served my '77 well for the past 40k miles.

77 and newer don't have breather valve in primary so motor oil and transmission oil don't mix.
So this makes possible to use transsmission fluid, it's better for clutch plates than normal motor oil and clutch operates better. There isn't any reason to use motor oil in primary with newer ironheads, atleast i don't know any.

Even though '77 and up don't mix the oil, there is no reason not to run motor oil in the primary. The clutches do just fine in motor oil. The HD primary oil for Big Twins is nothing more than a 30wt motor oil. Same for the Sportrans Fluid.

BTW, I have the original owner's manual for my '77. As far as what to put in the primary goes, it simply says "Use same grade of oil used in engine."

Like I said before, I've used nothing but 30wt non-detergent in my '77. It's got 52k miles on it and still has the original clutch plates.
