When I restored my 73 XLCH I decided to change the pipes to Drag Pipes. The bike runs and sounds great but the pipes are blueing very much. Much more on the front cylinder than the rear. Should I have expected this because of using Drag Pipes?
I've read many posts regarding jetting preventing or minimizing blueing. Could someone explain to me whether I made a mistake on the choice of pipesand/or theoriesof jetting?
While I'm deciding on any action to take, I took my original heatshields to be re-chromed. I'm not sure how they willlook with Drag Pipes butI figuredthis was another option. Do many people use heat shields with Drag Pipes? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
That blue up by the heads is normal with chrome pipes unless you had put some brand of anti-blueing in the pipes when they were new. From my experience, blue pipes mean a richer condition, and more yellow means a leaner running engine. I had shields on my old drag pipes and they didn't look bad and saved me from a couple of leg burns.
