I just bought a 84 bobber early year with a gen about 8 months ago I was not aware of these problems of cracks. I am wondering about if my bike has any defects anywhere like cracks or welds on the motor. is this a common thing. Where is the common problems so I can check mine out Thanks

Look on the bottom of the L/H engine case for weld beads underneath the clutch from a primary chain episode.....Another place to look is around the final drive front sprocket on the R/H engine case for stress cracks...There will probably be a layer of chain lube covering any demons...You'll have to remove the front sprocket cover and front sprocket to inspect. You shouldn't worry unless you are out there speed shifting at high RPM.

I do see some oil on the chain after acouple of days. But like you said I will have to take the sprocket cover off to see this I hope it is the seal and not the cases crack. What are the chances that it is the seal and not the crack.

chances that seal is busted ( I'd say) is 80% Remember change both seal and and that cover ( they are selling a set) under front sprocket. Check also that drivechain oiler has been removed or disenabled ( it might leak also) I'm not sure what was a year when factory dropped oiler out of production... -74 had it.

Is changing ythe seal going to be hard The manual does not say which way for the nut on the sprocket to be taken off. The bike I have is a 84 with a generater.Do I have to change the exhaust gaskets or do they just undo the straps. I have a evo also and things on this ironhead are a little different. Thanks

Ironheads don't have any seals in exhaust just clamps as you thought.
